Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center Opens Doors to Patients

Ribbon-cutting ceremony marks official opening 

Fredericksburg, Virginia, June 7, 2010 - Five years in the making, Virginia’s newest hospital – Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center – today officially opened its doors with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that attracted several hundred community leaders, physicians, elected officials, employees and well-wishers.

Kicking off the event was hospital CEO Tim Tobin, who was noticeably emotional in talking about the privilege and responsibility of care giving.  “Our goal is to create a uniquely different healthcare organization with our number one focus always being our patients,” he said.  “We will have a positive influence on this community that will last for generations.”

Matt Cobb, the Commonwealth’s Deputy Director of Health and Human Resources, welcomed the new hospital into the community, while Terika Richardson, SRMC Chief Operating Officer, quoted Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr., co-founder of HCA:  “It’s not brick and mortar and equipment that make a hospital. It’s the warmth and compassion and attitude of good employees that leads to quality care.”

Margaret Lewis, President of HCA’s Richmond-based Capital Division and Senior Executive of HCA Virginia, was one of the driving forces behind gaining approval for and building the hospital.   “Today represents a promise we make to everyone here,” she said.  “A promise to support those who supported us and to care for others the way we would want our loved ones cared for.”  Delivering on a promise HCA Virginia had made two years earlier, members of the hospital’s Advisory Board ceremonially planted an Amanogawa Japanese Flowering Cherry, symbolizing SRMC as HCA Virginia’s 13th hospital in the Commonwealth. 

In  a moment both personal and powerful, Advisory Board member Mary Lee Carter spoke about hope and peace, and heralded the release of 13 white doves as another symbol of the new hospital’s place within HCA Virginia.   State Senator Edd Houck read a resolution of support approved by both houses of the General Assembly, while Susan Spears, President of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, assisted with the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center opens with services dedicated to women’s and children’s, orthopedic, cardiac, and 24/7 emergency care, among others.  It also offers high-tech imaging, in- and outpatient surgery, and related services.   In April, Virginia’s Department of Certificate of Public Need (DCOPN) approved SRMC’s request to add new technology that will become part of the hospital’s comprehensive cancer treatment center.   The technology includes a linear accelerator, a CT (computed tomography) unit and a PET (positron emission tomography) unit, all of which are used for radiation therapy.
